Certificates of Occupancy

Effective April 1, 2022, Bristol will enforce the provision in Maine statute that towns over 2,000 people must require a Certificate of Occupancy before any structure that has been issued a Building Permit may be occupied or used.

A Cerificate of Occupancy confirms that the structure conforms to Code 101 of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA 101), covering essential life safety items such as fire exits and smoke alarms. The legal basis for this is Maine Revised Statutes Title 25, Part 6, chapter 313, subsection 2357-A.
