I bought a car, but not from a dealer. What should I have to register it?

We call this a casual sale. You’ll need to bring the following:

  • Current Maine insurance card
  • Bill of sale (including seller’s name, address and VIN)
  • Title, signed over correctly (for vehicles 1995 and newer)
  • Mileage
  • If transferring plates, please bring the old registration

For first-time registrations the person(s) whose name is on the registration must be present.
